     Sea Meadow Cottage is a peaceful summer spot with panoramic sea views.  From the deck you can see at one end, farmland, on the other, Pomquet Island. And in the middle of the view are the waters of St. George's Bay and off in the distance the shores of Cape Breton. 

     In the morning you can catch the sunrise if you are an early bird but in the evenings the sky over the bay is often spectacular.

     The sound track is mostly quiet but for the sound of shore and song birds.  In August, the crickets and frogs take over.  The sound of the ocean is sometimes a roar, sometimes silent.

     On a clear night the sky is spectacular.

    Bayfield is centrally located for those who may want to make a side trip to Cape Breton or perhaps, Prince Edward Island.

The Cottage

The cottage is a two bedroom bungalow decorated with antiques that have been part of cottage life for several generations.  It also has modern amenities like Internet service (bring your own laptop), satellite TV (small, non-digital) with PVR, window air conditioner, electric heating and a land line phone.  The kitchen is equipped with dishes and everything you need to make meals.

Bedrooms and bath

The Beach

There are several beaches at Bayfield.  Bayfield Beach Provincial Park is a two minute drive or, if you are a hardy sort, you can walk along the shoreline to this beach.  (This involves crossing a road.)  The provincial park beach is supervised during July and August.  Before and after these months, you pretty much have the sandbar to yourself.

If the provincial park beach is the best bet for swimming, the Ferry Beach is a great beach to walk along the waters edge.  This beach has some strong currents so if is frequented only by the occasional fellow walker.

Some of the most beautiful days in Bayfield are in Autumn, when it is at its most peaceful.  And the view from the inside of the cottage is always spectacular.

About Bayfield, Antigonish and the surrounding area

The community of Bayfield is made up of fishermen, farmers, permanent residents, cottagers and retirees.  Keep your eye open for dinners at the community centre at the wharf.  You'll enjoy good food, good company and support the local community.

The Surrounding area of Antigonish

     Farther afield, there are lovely scenic drives and hiking trails in the county.  The closest town is Antigonish, a university town which is a twenty minute drive away.  In  Antigonish you can take in summer theatre at the Bauer Theatre, on the campus of St. Francis Xavier University.  There are also two golf courses, (as well as one in nearby Guysborough) restaurants, grocery and other stores.  Antigonish is the location of the annual Antigonish Highland Games, which take place each year in July.

     Cape Breton is thirty minutes away and the ferry to Prince Edward Island is less than an hour away.  Both are also on Route 104.

Amenities

The cottage has two bedrooms - one with double bed; one with two twin beds.  Linens are provided.  Fridge, stove, microwave, small appliances, utensils as well as satellite and PVR service.  There is also a small TV, radio/CD player, telephone, and a window AC unit.

There is a convenience/liquor store/service station a seven-minute drive away and grocery stores 20 minutes away in the town of Antigonish.

Rates

Minimum stay is one week except in June and October when it is available for three day weekends.   The rate is $950 per week.  Each additional night is $135.

Directions

Bayfield is located off the 104 highway at exit 36.  It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from the Stanfield International Airport, outside of Halifax.  And it is approximately the same distance from the Sydney airport.

The cottage's central location is convenient for those who wish to also visit Cape Breton or Prince Edward Island.

My husband and I have stayed in a number of 'rent-by-owner' homes and have always had a positive experience, but Sea Meadow Cottage was by far the best. The photos on this site really capture the spirit of the place: cozy, comfortable and spotless. The view from the kitchen, living room and porch is phenomenal and the gardens are clearly loved and well tended. The first few days of our week stay, Nova Scotia caught the tail end of a hurricane - torrential rain and fierce wind. We were glad we were in the cottage, the perfect place to snuggle down in a storm. Antigonish is an easy drive - some nice restaurants, interesting shops and activities at St. Francis-Xavier. Our dog, Cheyenne, also gives the cottage rave reviews. She loved the porch and grounds - and the deserted beaches near by. We will be back!

Sea Meadow Cottage was wonderful. Clean, tasteful, comfortable and calm - we did day trips to Cabot Trail and PEI and found ourselves longing to be back at the quiet cottage! Winnifred was wonderful to deal with and her sea-side home is a real treasure.

Sea Meadow Cottage in Bayfield is a place that you will want to return to again and again. Beautifully situated on St George's Bay, the view is what you reminisce about once you're back at the office. The cottage has everything you need and the porch overlooks a lovely, well-kept garden. Both times I stayed allowed me the perfect calm holiday I was seeking. And during the infrequent times I sought out shopping or more bustle, Antigonish was only a short drive away.

Bayfield is a gentle, sweet experience. I loved my time there.

“Beautiful, Cozy, Relaxing!”

I cherish my memory of my week's stay at Sea Meadow Cottage. The cottage itself is very clean and fresh, utterly charming, and more than comfortable. (I have allergies and they were not bothered by a thing.) I truly rested here. The kitchen is very well equipped. The garden and setting of the cottage are like a dreamy watercolour painting: the roses, wildflowers, grassy field, blue ocean, open sky, stunning sunsets. The electric blue adirondack chairs set among the flower beds provided me with a perfect spot for reading, relaxing, gazing at eagles. Then there is the beach which provides lots of walking along a long shoreline. I have a fantastic set of photos of all the unusual rocks I saw on the beach. In short, Sea Meadow was a perfect retreat -- quiet but with lots of beauty to stimulate the senses, and with a great deck and wonderful kitchen table to foster happy time with companions. I will definitely return!
